All about service opps and hours.

I need service hours! Where can I find opportunities to volunteer?

You're in the right place!

We've prepared our list of carefully-curated, constantly-updated suggested opportunities for your community service hours HERE— there's hundreds of opportunities organized for you. Please keep in mind you are not limited to these events. Use the “Sign Up” information provided for each event to sign up— and take your friends with you, too! Last-minute opportunities may also be sent out through Remind.

How many service hours do I need per semester?

For the 2021-2022 school year, you must earn at least 10 hours each semester. A maximum of 3 hours can come from substantial donations. The other 7 hours must be non-donation — or in other words, come from actual volunteering work. Remember, the students who earn the most hours look the best to schools and employers — and you might receive an award from Plano East NHS.

What does NOT count as service credits?

Remember, all service hours recorded on your hours sheet must have all information filled in, including all supervisor information requested. The NHS Executive Committee may not approve some hours on your hours sheet at its discretion.

How much can I round my hours?

Hours should be recorded as specifically as possible, or rounded up to the nearest half-hour increment. For example, if you received 0.75 hours, please round to the nearest half-hour increment: 1 hour.

What happens if I "fake" or "forge" my hours?

Inflating, doubling, over-rounding, or falsifying hours or signatures will result in consequences and/or permanent dismissal from the National Honor Society. The Executive Committee spot-checks random hours sheets for authenticity.

When and where are hours sheets due?

Fall 2021 Hours Sheets will be due mid-December 2021.

Hours sheets MUST be submitted on-time through the NHS portal. Be sure to login with your school account and upload a photo as proof of service.

All due dates are subject to change. Connect with us for the most up-to-date information.

Do donations count as hours?

Yes, but a maximum of 3 of your service hours may be derived from substantial, quality donations. This is in fairness for all our members. Find service opportunities here.

Why does my volunteer supervisor have to provide his or her name, signature, and phone number?

When processing your hours sheets, the NHS Executive Committee randomly spot-checks phone numbers to verify the authenticity of the hours and the upholding of the “character” pillar — and yes, we really do that.

Do summer volunteer hours count towards NHS?

Yes. Both Current and New Members may log up to 6 summer hours to their FALL hours sheet. Remember, a maximum of 3 hours may be derived from substantial donations. Summer hours are subject to additional scrutiny by the NHS Executive Committee after you turn in your hours sheet.

At this time, summer hours may NOT be applied to your spring hours sheet. However, winter break hours (or any hours earned after fall hours sheets are due) may be applied to the subsequent spring semester.

If I do more than 15 hours in one semester, can they roll over to the next?

No. You must consistently contribute to your community throughout the entire school year. All Current and New Members must contribute at least 15 hours of community service each semester. Remember, a maximum of 3 hours may be derived from substantial donations.
